Role: Pastor |
Hi my name is Phil Irvine and I’m the Pastor at Emu Plains Community Baptist Church. My family and I moved all the way from the Blue Mountains and to live in the community here in Emu Plains. Jesus said “I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full.” Sometimes we find that our lives are so full with things to do, but we don’t seem to be fulfilled. I enjoy running, spending time with my family, playing Xbox and a good coffee. But what fills my life is Jesus. If you are wanting your life full, the best it can be, why not check out Jesus and take him up on this promise?

This week, we turn our attention to Easter and Jesus making His way to the cross. Before that happens, He is betrayed by Judas and deserted by the disciples, but He is not alone, for His Father is always with Him. In this passage, Jesus shows us the humble position we all need to have before God, "Not what I will, but what you will". May we be people who WATCH and PRAY and submit ourselves to God in everything.

This can be a hard passage to understand, but Jesus keeps reminding His disciples to be: WATCHFUL (v.5,34,35,37), ON GUARD (v.9,23,33) and STANDING FIRM (v.13). We certainly feel like we are in these last days, but Jesus still expects us to be doing those same things. Focus on Him and do be WORRIED (v.11) or ALARMED (v.7)

In this passage, we see Peter's amazing declaration of who he thinks Jesus is, the Messiah. Jesus then goes on to explain what that really means; He will suffer, be rejected, be killed and then rise again. For us to be a true disciple of Jesus, we will have to follow in His footsteps; deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Him.

In this section, we see the Disciples and John the Baptist serving Jesus as they obey God's call in their lives. On the other hand, we have Herod who doesn't listen to God but instead, listens to his wife, his dinner guests, a dancer and himself. Basically, anyone besides God. Whose voice are we allowing into our lives?

In this section, Jesus uses parables to teach us about the kingdom of God. In verse 9, He says, "Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear." The key to the kingdom is that we do not just hear His words with our ears, but we listen with spiritual discernment to understand what He is saying and then obey Him in our lives.

After Mark stated that Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of God in v.1. he then goes on to prove the authority Jesus has as the Messiah. He has authority over people, authority over demons, authority over sickness, including leprosy.

In this passage, we see how it is not just Mark who believes that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. The prophet Isaiah believed it, John the Baptist did as well, God himself declared that Jesus is His beloved Son, and the first disciples were willing to follow Him. What about you? Who do you believe Jesus is?
