Phil Irvine

Role: Pastor

Hi my name is Phil Irvine and I’m the Pastor at Emu Plains Community Baptist Church. My family and I moved all the way from the Blue Mountains and to live in the community here in Emu Plains. Jesus said “I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full.” Sometimes we find that our lives are so full with things to do, but we don’t seem to be fulfilled. I enjoy running, spending time with my family, playing Xbox and a good coffee. But what fills my life is Jesus. If you are wanting your life full, the best it can be, why not check out Jesus and take him up on this promise?

As we put God's word into our hearts, trust in His leading and obey Him in all things. We find that God perfects the path that we are on. We cannot gain eternal life by living a right life, we gain it by submitting ourselves to the one (Jesus) who has lived the perfect life and who is the Light of the world.

God reinforces in this passage the value of wisdom and that there is nothing that can compare to it. Until we understand the true value of wisdom, we will not fully appreciate it or seek after it. Wisdom is a tree of life and following wisdom will lead to eternal life which is found in Jesus where all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden.

The metaphor of life being a journey is familiar to us, and here in Chapter 2, Solomon challenges his son and us about which direction we are going and who it is that we are going to be walking with. Is it going to be God who will protect the way of his faithful ones? Or the wicked, whose path leads to the grave?

Solomon wrote the book of Proverbs to share with Israel what God had taught him about how to live a skilful and disciplined life. In this introduction, we get to see why proverbs are helpful and the key to knowledge, which is "the fear of the Lord". As we study the book together, may we grow in the knowledge of God and allow that to affect the way we live.

Passage: Jude 1:1-25
Duration: 37 mins 21 secs
The letter that Jude writes to the Christians of his day is full of history and theology, some of which is really hard to understand. But also we see that God is in control over His creation and will keep people. Keep those who are in Jesus, safe and bring them to eternal life. Keep those who reject Jesus, including the angels, for judgement. The challenge that Jude brings to us is to keep ourselves in God's love (v.21).

Passage: 3 John 1:1-14
Duration: 34 mins 27 secs
In John's third letter, John writes to his dear friend, Gaius. Gaius is a man that is faithful in his Christian walk and particularly walking in the truth. John wants to encourage him to continue in this walk and to grow in his gift of hospitality. The challenge comes in verse 11, when John says to Gaius, "do not imitate what is evil but what is good." We too are challenged to imitate Jesus who came "not to be served, but to serve" (Mark 10:45). How is it that God wants you to serve those around you as you walk in faith?

In the letter that Paul wrote to Philemon, we get to see three men; Paul, Philemon and Onesimus wrestling with their faith and how that will guide their lives. Paul is bringing reconciliation between Philemon and Onesimus. Philemon wrestles with what it means to forgive and Onesimus has to humbly submit himself to Philemon for the sake of Christ. As we look at this letter and these three men, we see ourselves and the struggles we have living out our faith.

In this short prophetic writing of Obadiah, we see God bringing judgment against the nation of Edom because of the way they treated the nation of Israel (who were family). But all is not lost and there is hope for all who trust God to bring about His eternal kingdom.
