Role: Pastor |
Hi my name is Phil Irvine and I’m the Pastor at Emu Plains Community Baptist Church. My family and I moved all the way from the Blue Mountains and to live in the community here in Emu Plains. Jesus said “I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full.” Sometimes we find that our lives are so full with things to do, but we don’t seem to be fulfilled. I enjoy running, spending time with my family, playing Xbox and a good coffee. But what fills my life is Jesus. If you are wanting your life full, the best it can be, why not check out Jesus and take him up on this promise?

In this passage we get to see a Christian virtue that is often overlooked and easily neglected in our life. The virtue of THANKFULNESS. Jesus performed an amazing healing in the lives of 10 men that were afflicted with leprosy. Jesus tells them to show themselves to the priest and on the way all 10 were healed. The point of this story is that only one out of those 10 came back to thank Jesus and give praise to God for his healing. Are we quick to pray, but slow to give thanks? God wants us all to be thankful people.

We are all sinners in need of a Saviour, some of us know this and others don't see their need. The woman saw her need for forgiveness and saw the Saviour, whereas Simon the Pharisee couldn't see his need or see the Saviour.

Hebrews 11:6 says that "without faith it is impossible to please God". Here in this story, we see the great faith of the Centurion as he encounters Jesus, but many of us feel that our faith is lacking. We need to understand what true faith is, not in how much we can muster, but rather, in whom we are placing our faith.

After Jesus had been tested by the Devil in the wilderness, He returns to Galilee where He taught in synagogues with everyone praising Him. When Jesus entered Nazareth, where He had been brought up, He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day and spoke. Once again people were amazed of the gracious words that came from His lips. But in a few short verses, from Jesus' words, all the people were furious with Him. What was happening for the people in Jesus' hometown?

In this passage, we get the see one of the great mysteries of the Bible, Jesus is fully God and fully Man. Even though He is the God who became flesh and dwells with us (John 1:14), He is a human like us, yet without sin (Heb. 4:15). Jesus had to grow in wisdom and stature and so do we.

As we start to look at the Gospel of Luke, he makes it really clear why he is writing to Theophilus and to us. "so that you may KNOW the certainty of the things you have been taught." The Gospels show us who Jesus is and what He came to do. As we study this Gospel together over the next few months, I pray that we would be reminded again and again about the certainty of what we have been taught.

God first loved us and showed His love by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have a relationship with Him. Do you know Christ because he lives in you, or do you only know about Christ? As Christians, we are to love one another because of the love of God in us. Show God's love as you share with others this Christmas.

In the Christmas story, the Angel said, "I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people". The Christian life should be one that is marked with JOY. It is one of the fruits of the Spirit, Paul often prayed with JOY for the churches and James tells us to consider it pure JOY when we face trials. Peter gives us the answer to how we get this JOY in our lives and just as in the Christmas story, it is found in Jesus.

The early part of this passage shows there was no peace for Israel, Joseph, Mary or the Shepherds with everything that was happening for them at the time. Where do you find peace in the busyness of life? Don't look for it in the world, but look for it in Jesus, for He has overcome the world and it is only in Him that you will find true peace.
