Jesus told His disciples that they ARE the SALT of the earth and the LIGHT of the world. It wasn't something that they could opt into if they wanted to or take on as a special responsibility once they reached a level of spiritual maturity. That was who they were once they became a follower of Jesus. The same is true for us today, we too are the SALT of the earth and the LIGHT of the world.
