In this section Paul wants to encourage the readers, that when you are connected to Jesus everything else is taken care of, this includes death. The key phrase is found in verse 17 "And so we will be with the Lord forever." What a great promise that is, no matter whether we are alive when Jesus returns or sleeping in death, we all will be with Jesus forever. That is where our hope is found and what encourages us in our lives.

In this section, we see Paul caring for the church. Firstly, as a faithful steward of the gospel that was entrusted to him (v.4). Secondly, as a loving mother who is caring for her children (v.7) and thirdly, as a concerned father, who wants to encourage, comfort and urge his children to live the right way.

As Paul commences his first letter to the Thessalonians, his words of encouragement and exhortation to the church there as they sought to be a witness to the people around them are just as much God speaking to us today. He begins by giving thanks for their faith that leads to work, their love that is central to their labour and their hope in Jesus which gives endurance. He then encourages them to truly know who they are - that they are loved by God and chosen by Him. He helps them to understand that the power of the Spirit is at work in them to change hearts, minds and lives - producing fruit and releasing gifts. Under the leading of the Spirit, he describes their response to the gospel as being an example to all those around them - those who know Christ and to those who are yet to turn to Him. We too are called to live out such a response to the gospel.

Passage: Acts 17:1-9
Duration: 22 mins 54 secs
As we prepare to look at the 1 Thessalonians, we turn our attention to the birth of the church at Thessalonica and Paul's ministry there, in Acts 17:1-9. We see him REASONING, EXPLAINING, PROVING and PROCLAIMING who Jesus is; He is the suffering Messiah, God's King, who died and rose again. This is what that church believed at that first meeting and what Paul encouraged them to continue with; thus, we get his first letter to them, 1 Thessalonians, which we will study over the next couple of months.
