Passage: Ezra 1:1-8
Series: Ezra
Duration: 32 mins 49 secs
King Cyrus of Persia lived far away from Jerusalem and did not appear to be a believer in God. Yet God moves his heart to allow the Israelites to return to Jerusalem, after 70 years in exile, and rebuild the temple. Like the temple being rebuilt, one stone at a time, God chooses to build His church one person at a time. Jesus has bridged the gap between God and us. Pray that God would move your heart to serve.

Paul had friends that stayed (Aristarchus, Mark, Justus and Luke), that prayed (Epaphras) and strayed (Demas). Luke was a much valued companion of Paul. A beloved Christian, skilled physician, devoted friend and careful historian. God can use us, no matter our skills, training or background. We can use our skills wherever we find ourselves, with whomever we come in contact. Demas loved this world and deserted Paul. We can use our religious veneer to cover our love for this world. The Colossae Church was under attack as people came in and said they needed more than the gospel. We don't need to grow by adding things into our life for we are already complete in Christ.

We have a glorious hope. With all the struggles the world is going through, the answer is Jesus. Paul wrote from his imprisonment in Rome. He may have felt discouraged, frustrated and perhaps, sometimes unwell, yet Christ works through his weaknesses. Prayer does not always come easily and naturally. We need to practice this important discipline to continue our connection with God. Remember all that God has done. Praise and thanksgiving are key factors in every prayer. Paul prayed for open doors to proclaim the gospel, not so he could get out of gaol. We need to pray for opportunities to share the good news of Jesus with others.

The instructions in this passage are to guide our relationships with everyone. There are lessons for all of us regardless of our situation. We are each to take these instructions personally. This passage is all about doing what is fitting in the Lord, pleasing the Lord, reverence for the Lord and serving the Lord. Jesus is supreme in everything and we give ourselves over to Him. Our heavenly garments of compassion, kindness and patience should show to those closest to us.

We have been looking at things we need to take out out of our lives, the things of a worldly nature. But we are citizens of heaven and we need to dress ourselves in new garments of compassion, kindness, humility, patience, forgiveness and love. We need Jesus in our lives to put on these garments in ways that will glorify Him. We can place our lack before Him and seek His help. God has chosen us, called us and saved us but not based on our merit. We are set apart, dearly loved and forgiven.

In the second half of this letter, Paul moves into practical application of our faith. We need to put to death our old practices. Our connection with Jesus means the Spirit lives in us, so sin should not live in us. Set your mind on things above where our hearts and minds are in heaven and our feet are on earth. We are connected to Jesus and we put sins off through His strength. Let's be made more in the image of Christ and surrender to Him every day.

Religious rules and outward practices do nothing for our salvation. The basis of our freedom is the victory we have in Jesus at the Cross. Paul denies aestheticism where people sought goodness through their behaviour. We have freedom in Christ because of what He has done, not what we do. We are dead to all those religious practices of old because of Christ. We are already sanctified through Jesus, have been transferred to God's kingdom and are governed by Him. Is Jesus supreme in your life? Are you trusting in Jesus alone and drawing on His spiritual power?

We see in this passage how Paul applies the truth of Jesus' supremacy in his own life even through his suffering and imprisonment. Many early churches were being infiltrated by people who wanted to bring in new mysteries of false teaching, so Paul teaches them so that they can continue in the faith. Christ is the source of all hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Paul teaches the full message of the gospel - there is nothing to add, no deeper mystery. Paul was delighted that the Colossians were disciplining themselves to grow in their faith in Christ. Pray that we would keep ourselves aligned with Jesus, sharing our faith with others and that our strength, discipline and energy be in and through Jesus.

The false teaching of Gnosticism tried to dethrone Jesus as King and was likely infiltrating the church at Colossae. The world often recognises Jesus as a good, great, even a prominent man, but denies His supremacy. Jesus created all things and everything exists for Him and is held together by Him. We tend to all want supremacy. We may use different words like success, popularity or wealth. The fruit in our lives is about remaining in Jesus and not moving from the hope held out in the gospel. It is trusting that God has done everything already and He is sufficient for our salvation, for restoring of relationship with Him and for all our needs.

Paul prays for spiritual blessings, growth and outcomes. He often prays for his readers to have full knowledge of God leading to lives that please God and are worthy to bear the name of Jesus. We need to continually grow through Christ, to be controlled by God, His knowledge and wisdom. What fills us, controls us. When we are filled with the Spirit, we are controlled by the Spirit. Are you growing in your knowledge of God? Are you using that knowledge to please God? Are you trusting in God's power and strength or your own?
