Hi my name is Phil Irvine and I’m the new Pastor at Emu Plains Community Baptist Church. My family and I have recently moved all the way from the Blue Mountains and come to live in the community here in Emu Plains. Jesus said “I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full.” Sometimes we find that our lives are so full with things to do, but we don’t seem to be fulfilled. I enjoy running, spending time with my family, playing Xbox and a good coffee. But what fills my life, is Jesus. If you are wanting your life full, the best it can be, why not check out Jesus and take him up on this promise.

As Christians, we need to stand firm in the spiritual battle we face daily. We can do this because of the truth of the gospel - the good news of what Jesus Christ has done for us through His death on the cross. We do not have to face this battle alone, but can walk together as one, with other Christians, by our faith and by caring and supporting each other.

As Christians, we have Jesus, who is greater than anything we might have to face in this world. Jesus is our salvation and He is the truth. Truth is not found from what we see in this world but is found in God's Word. We need to know this truth so that we can be ready to battle anything that Satan may throw at us. As we our live our lives and witness to others, we are to be people who are walking in the truth. When we accept Jesus into our life, we receive His righteouness. Because of what Jesus has done for us on the cross, we now have a direct relationship with God.

In our Christian walk, we can be oblivious to who our enemy is, which can leave us unprepared. Satan does not live in Hell but roams throughout the earth. We need to stand firm against Satan, but in doing so, we need to now who he is. Satan rules over those who are not children of God and is always trying to destroy anything of God. We cannot underestimate or overestimate the power of Satan. We cannot fight Satan with our own flesh and blood, but only with the power of God. God gives us everything we need to defeat Satan.

In this passage we see that there are two ways to travel through life - one that leads to heaven, the other leading to hell. The easy road leads to destruction, the more difficult road, with Jesus, leads to eternal life. The question we need to be asking ourselves in our Christian walk is, does our faith in Jesus cost us anything, did our decision to follow Jesus change our life and is this reflected in our life? When we come to stand before God, it is only what Jesus says that will matter in the end. Obedience to God is true evidence that we have faith in the Lord. Do you hear God's Word and then do God's Word?

Jesus was resolute as He set out for Jerusalem, even knowing what was about to happen to Him. Why did He do this? So that we could be saved from our sins and have our relationship with God restored. As Christians, we need to live our lives as servants to others and reflect Jesus' example He showed us whilst He was here on earth.

In this passage, Paul tells Timothy to fight the good fight of faith - something we still need to do ourselves today. As Christians, we face all types of life battles and Paul's recommendation is to flee from all things evil. We can't fight the battles we face in our own strength and so we need to flee into the arms of God and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness as we serve Jesus Christ.

In this passage, Paul raises an issue that is still very relevant for us today - the love of money and materialism. We live very comfortably compared to many others. We need to open our eyes to the urgent spiritual and physical needs of so many people in our world. We also need to be content with what God has provided for us and not be proud of our wealth and crave for more. Money is not to be our master. There is only one Master that gets us into heaven, and that is Jesus Christ.

As a church it is a good thing when the leadership work together in harmony and love. Conversely, it is tragic when the opposite is true. Timothy appeared to be having some problems with the elders of the church at Ephesus. He was a young man and still had much to learn. Ephesus was not an easy place to minister. Only God knows the hearts of everyone. No pastor or church member is perfect, but that should not hinder us from striving for perfection. The ministry of a local church rises and falls with its leadership. Godly leadership means God’s blessing, and that is what we want and need.

Paul is speaking directly to Timothy in this passage, that is of benefit to us all. We need to be prepared in our own lives for Jesus' return. We need to be on guard to false teaching, identified by people's actions in the way that they live and the way that they act. Our responsibility is to be nourished in God's Word so that we can continue to grow in our Christian walk, live out our faith and use our spiritual gifts to build up the church so that we can minister to this world.

In this passage, Paul list the attributes required of leaders in the church. Leaders must lead under the authority of Jesus Christ and are accountable to Him. Leaders need to be in the right relationship with Jesus and care for the people. Leaders need to know the words of Jesus and live as a good example to others. Paul is not saying that leaders need to be perfect, but they must be disciplined in their life and have the respect of others. Whilst this passage is directed to church leaders, the same applies to all Christians and we need to aspire to the way God wants us to live.
